A re-examination of the synoptic and mesoscale meteorology of Ash Wednesday 1983

چکیده
The fires on Ash Wednesday 1983 were some of the most destructive in Australia’s history, with 75 lives lost, more than 2000 houses and 335 000 ha of rural land burnt, and 250 000 stock lost. Bureau of Meteorology (1984) (hereafter BOM84) documents the meteorology of the situation, points to the extreme drought prevailing at the time that led to very dry fuels, and postulates that the mobile upper trough associated with the event may be an ingredient that differentiates a ‘blow-up’ fire day from a merely ‘bad’ fire day. That report did not, however, address the issues of the dynamics of the frontal system that moved through South Australia (SA) and Victoria on 16 February 1983, or address the issue of just how extreme was the meteorology of the event, apart from the issue of drought. An important feature that is Aust. Met. Mag. 54 (2005) 35-55

Summertime re-circulations of air pollutants over the north-eastern Iberian coast observed from systematic EARLINET lidar measurements in Barcelona
Regular aerosol backscatter measurements using an elastic-backscatter lidar were performed from May 2000 to December 2002 in Barcelona (Spain) in the frame of EU EARLINET Project (European Aerosol Research Lidar Network). Vertical profiles retrieved in a regular schedule confirmed the presence of multiple aerosol layers of regional origin above the mixing layer during numerous measurement days....
متن کاملMahabad Spring Freezing Forecasting, Using Synoptic Study
The quality of pressure distribution over the atmosphere of the sea level and geopotential altitude at different atmosphere layers affect on many climate and meteorology phenomena of the earth surface. One of the important meteorology phenomenon is the occurrence of frost phenomenon especially late spring frost. In this surrey, occurring late spring frost days and minimum temperature during the...
متن کاملSatellite-derived land surface parameters for mesoscale modelling of the Mexico City basin
Mesoscale meteorological modelling is an important tool to help understand air pollution and heat island effects in urban areas. Accurate wind simulations are difficult to obtain in areas of weak synoptic forcing. Local factors have a dominant role in the circulation and include land surface parameters and their interaction with the atmosphere. This paper examines an episode during the MCMA-200...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Mesoscale Convective Systems Characteristics in West of Iran Case Study: April 23, 2004
In Iran the issue of occurring natural disasters, particularly mesoscale convective systems. They are important on one hand, because of their increasing intimidations and causing damages and on the other hand, because of their increasing abundance, time of duration, and happening. Therefore life cycle, constituton condition and mesoscale convective systems features in west of Iran using satelli...
متن کاملStatistical and anomalies analysis of the 50-year precipitation of the synoptic stations in Iran
The purpose of this study is to determine the long-term variations in rainfall data as well as to identify wet and dry periods of 35 synoptic stations in Iran. In order to know the variation of rainfall in studied stations, average maps, coefficient of variation and skewness were drawn. Then, using the Mann-Kendall test, the significance of the trend on each station was tested at 95% confidence...
